Please help Joe Redifer. - Mar 31, 2008 11:46
I read in a forum post that you have played the Sega Saturn through the Scart to Component thing.
When you use this does Nights go up to 704x640 resolution?
How do you enable this if it does?
Since this RGB Scart thing only makes Component be able to do RGB and is not as good as Component working normally,
how much better is it than S Video?
Does it actually work better through this Scart to Component thing or would it be better through Scart on it' s own.

I am pretty sure he meant COMPOSITE not COMPONENT.

Composite (Yellow plug for video) with Red and White for audio, the adaptors for these to go into Scart are very common and come with most PAL consoles.

There would be no point in a Component>SCART adapter that I can think of.

I initially thought the same thing, but then remembered that Joe is completely immune to trouble.

Where i live in Australia there is a Scart to Component thing it works with Foxtel Digital, we don' t even get HD cable tv here, we will in 3 months though.
I think he said it was for tv' s that don' t have scart and he was using it.
I do wish they would just emulate these games for HDMI video on PS3 or 360.
Most new tv' s don' t have scart.

That came to mind too. A normal thing for Joe would be to have an awesome come back in the face of death

He means component.

And no, using RGB to component does not increase the resolution. Nights will still run in 240p, or about 320x240 or whatever it runs in. It is better than s-video if you have a discerning eye, especially in the color red because that still tends to bleed in s-video, at least on NTSC sets, not sure about PAL s-video. If you have Saturn s-video, then you have it pretty good. Component is better, but it isn' t worth going all out just for one system.

I have my Saturn, TurboGrafx-16, Genesis/Sega CD/32X/, SNES, Neo Geo and Sega Master System all hooked up via the RGB to Component method and they look great. My original goal was to get s-video out of the Genesis without modding its innards, and then I saw that most new TVs lacked s-video ports and only had composite and component, so I went all the way. If you like I can post some comparison shots for you.

Am I out of trouble now?

If we each pitch in $100 he can get out on bail.

For just about $3 a day -- just the cost of a cup of coffee -- you, too, can help Joe Redifer buy his daily cup of coffee.

OK I have some comparison shots. First of all RGB to component is in no way " inferior" to any other type of component video. RGB is the best you can get.

Anyway, I took 3 games that every Saturn owner has, Virtua Fighter 2, Nights, and Radiant Silvergun and did some " back-and-forth" comparisons (2 seconds each) in the form of animated GIF files. Click on the links below to view them as they can be pretty large and I didn' t want them to auto-load on the forum page. All images taken with the same camera on the same settings using the same TV

--Virtua Fighter 2 - S-video vs Component

--Nights - S-video vs Component
(Notice especially the line on the outside of the head of the thing on the left side of the screen. It' s not really there, but the inadequacies of s-video create the effect.

And just for fun:
