That's only one possibility. Socialism doesn't have to be operated by the federal government. If you give the power to the people you'll have a system that works.

Socialism isn't some sort of extreme thing, it's right in the middle, and it has a wide reach. This anarchist capitalism the US has is extreme. The result of shit like that is when you have the Government spending trillions of tax dollars to bail out the rich assholes that created this mess in the first place. Now we're seeing a possible crash of the US dollar. Pretty soon we'll be putting toilet paper in our wallets and wiping our asses with any bills we have left.
